This research investigates the transformative potential of craft mode approaches in contemporary architectural practice in South Africa, emphasising the integration of traditional craftsmanship, collaborative design processes, and technological innovation. The study focuses on three contemporary practitioners: Peter Rich, Kate Otten, and Earthworld Architects. Through case study analyses of their projects, supplemented by interviews with these practitioners, the study employs a practice-led and pragmatic research methodology to uncover the value of craft mode approaches in the architectural design process. Key themes identified include hands-on approaches, experiences and influences, technology and tools, design philosophies, and craft mode approaches. These themes encompass the transfer of knowledge and skills, alignment with circular design principles, and the enhancement of sustainability and social cohesion in the construction process. The findings highlight how these architects effectively address pressing architectural challenges while promoting sustainability, cultural preservation, and community empowerment. This study provides valuable insights for architects, researchers, and policymakers interested in leveraging craft mode approaches to create sustainable, culturally resonant, and socially empowering architectural solutions Architecture MArch (Prof) Unrestricted Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology SDG-04: Quality Education SDG-09: Industry, innovation and infrastructure SDG-11: Sustainable cities and communities 2024-12-12T11:46:03Z 2024-12-12T11:46:03Z 2025-05-18 2024-07-18 Mini Dissertation * A2025 http://hdl.handle.net/2263/99952 10.25403/UPresearchdata.27330654 10.25403/UPresearchdata.27335046 10.25403/UPresearchdata.27335253 10.25403/UPresearchdata.27335409 en © 2023 University of Pretoria.
