This study addresses the decontextualised architectural landscape of South Africa, as well as the scenographic products of Cape Vernacular architecture outside of the Western Cape. The research focuses on the authenticity of the Fourth Cape Vernacular and undertakes a thorough examination of the design properties used by architects to develop design expressions within this strain, which emerged in the 1950s. While defining the design properties for the Fourth Cape Vernacular, the primary focus of this study is on the precognition of a Fifth Cape Vernacular, as to provide a comprehensive understanding of its contemporary relevance and architectural authenticity. The study employs a comparative analysis of notable architects such as Pius Pahl, Gawie Fagan, Revel Fox, Martin Kruger, and Henri Comrie. It highlights their unique contributions to the evolution of the Cape Vernacular and identifies a set of design properties crucial for contemporary architectural practice in the Western Cape. These properties, categorised under design philosophies, theories, attitudes, approaches, and expressions, aim to guide architects in their design development phases. The document is structured to first introduce concepts of regionalism, vernacular architecture, and the Cape Vernacular’s historical and modern developments. The core analysis sections delve into the works and design properties of the Fourth and Fifth Cape Vernacular architects, concluding with recommendations for future architectural practices. The study focuses on the precognition of the Fifth Cape Vernacular to ensure that future architectural works within this movement maintain authenticity, aiming to provide a comprehensive understanding of its potential relevance. In an attempt to address the current challenges of South African architecture, the research outcomes advocate for contextually appropriate, place-specific, and authentic approaches that respects and evolves from historical roots. This research aims to instill an intrinsic understanding among architects practicing in the Western Cape, ensuring the sustained relevance and authenticity of their work.
