ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study interrogates creative processes in generating theatrical music in plays at the Kenya National Drama Festival (KNDF). Generally, the process of generating music for theatrical works is multifaceted: it is a creative synthesis of musical elements, which are moulded in relation to the visual and verbal components of a these works. Music interacts with these components in theatrical productions to communicate meaning. At work is an interdependence in creative processes that unfold during the preparation and performance of theatrical music elements and the visual and verbal components of a theatrical work. Existing literature in musicology, creativity and dramaturgical studies on theatrical music in Kenya tends to downplay the importance of creative processes of music in theatre production. Using a music-to-other-media approach, this study focusses on these creative processes during preparation and staging of plays, with particular interest in how new and diverse musical ideas are created. Acknowledging the multifaceted nature of theatrical music and the complexity of the topic under scrutiny, the study advocates for a multiperspectival approach to provide an avenue for assessing the prevailing thinking on these musical creative processes. On a macro-level, beginning from a historical perspective, Chapter 3 sheds light on the antecedents and trends in the development of theatrical music in plays, while highlighting how socio-political and cultural dynamics in Kenya have impacted on the music and shaped its creation. Also under the macro-level perspective is the KNDF context in Chapter 1, which highlights the formal organisational negotiations that have shaped theatrical music and its creation in plays. On a micro-level, Chapters 4 and 5 focus on play practitioners’ creative workspace and interrogate creative processes during preparation and staging. In Chapter 4, using an ethnographic approach, I observe and interrogate discourses by practitioners and other key informants on the processes they employ in generating theatrical music for plays at the KNDF. Chapter 5 provides a close reading of creative processes in the structural and contextual content of theatrical music in five plays performed by primary and secondary schools at the KNDF between 2007 and 2015. I consider the development of the plays over a period of time in order to observe the chronological aspect of creative processes. Drawing on preselected metatheories discussed in Chapter 2, data from history (literature and archival information), ethnography (interviews and observations) and close reading of the music, the study suggests a conceptual model for understanding creative processes in generating theatrical music for plays. The conclusion presents the argument that these creative processes are influenced and shaped by contextual factors (history, theory and practice within a community of practice) and can be conceptualised as processual, iterative and continuous macro- and micro-processes.
