ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to expand on resilience to develop an explanatory structural model to explain the variance in burnout. In addition, this study focused on the role that work-home interaction play in the development of burnout. An Ex post facto correlative research design was used with a population size of 176 teachers from Primary and Secondary schools in Bloemfontein. The Maslach burnout inventory was used to measure burnout along with the Survey Work-Home Interaction-Nijmegen (SWING) to measure role-conflict with reference to work-home interaction. Furthermore, the resilience scale was used to measure the resilience levels of teachers. The reliability coefficients were acceptable for all three measuring instruments. The first structural model represented non-statistical significant results with some items in correlation with the SWING, as well as the correlation with the subscales of the resilience scale. Furthermore, higher levels of emotional exhaustion results in higher levels of depersonalization (H02: ϒ 32 =0), thus leading to burnout. The research results also confirmed that high levels of depersonalization lead to low levels of personal fulfilment (H09:ϒ43 =0). Lastly, the study revealed that the statement of resilience, that may possibly serve as a buffer against burnout, was not statistically significant.
