ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Age-mixing has been hypothesized to affect HIV transmission dynamics and has been used to partially explain the high HIV incidence rate among adolescent girls and young women in Sub-Saharan Africa. However, evidence in the literature is mixed. We undertook this study to quantify the age-mixing patterns among men in Eswatini and to investigate the effect of partner age difference on risky sexual behaviours that affect HIV transmission risk. We used nationwide data collected by the Swaziland HIV Incidence Measurement Survey (2010–2011) and fitted linear mixed models with partner age as the response and participant age as the only predictor. To investigate the effect of part-ner age difference on condom use, sex frequency and partner type, we fitted cumulative logistic mixed models to the data. A stratified Cox model was used to explore the effect of partner age difference on relationship duration. In these analyses, we adjusted for participant age and the total number of partners in the past six months. We found that a yearly increase in male participant age resulted in an increase in partner age difference by 0.63 years on average. Men in this study population had large within-individual variation in partner ages that increased with age. We also found that similar aged relationships were associated with high frequency of using condoms whereas relationships with large partner age differences were associated with low condom use. Sex frequency decreased as the partner age difference increased until age difference of 10 years when it plateaued. Large partner age differences were associated with a low likelihood of a partner being a casual partner. However, there was no sufficient evidence that partner age difference had an effect on relationship duration. An age-mixing pattern characterised by older men having large partner age differences, high variability in partner ages and low condom use indicates that they can act as intermediaries through which HIV can be transmitted from one age group to another. Bewyse hiervoor is egter gemengd.
