Kaar -- Criticism and interpretation Human-animal studies Ecocriticism Van Niekerk, Marlene -- Kaar -- Criticism and interpretation Afrikaans poetry -- 21st century -- Criticism and interpretation UCTD Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2018 ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This MA dissertation is focused on the various perceptions and representations of animals in Marlene van Niekerk’s prize-winning anthology of verse Kaar (2012). The dissertation commences with an introduction that outlines the research design of the study followed by a theoretical chapter that gives an overview of the articulation between human animal studies and ecocriticism. Human animal studies constitue the theoretical development that provides the most suitable framework for a study of the poems by Van Niekerk devoted to animals. Specific attention is given to landscape and place in addition to insights from biomusicology that are relevant for a study of some of the animal poems in Kaar. The chapter about taxonomies and the challenge posed to hierarchies in Van Niekerk’s anthology is illustrated in discussions of the poems “Herfsmeditasie 1” and “Etologie”. These poems contain reflections by the poetic speaker about the place of humans (and non-human animals) within the greater natural environment in addition to the postcolonial context in South Africa. The third chapter is a study of six poems in Kaar devoted to birds and the fourth chapter explores musicality as a point of convergence for human and non-human animals. Here the poems “Visioen”, “Brulpadda” and “Turdus merula” receive particular attention. Musicality may also be a further attempt to understand both nature and human nature as it is a phenomenon that is shared by animals and humans alike. This statement bears out the argument offered by Derrida that humans are followers of nature. The conclusion reached by this study is that humans follow nature instead of assuming a position at the top of the hierarchy governing life on earth. The distance between human and non-human animals is put to question and observations of the natural environment often leave the poet and readers with more questions than answers about nature. Questions about the essence of what it means to be human become pertinent at the same time. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie MA-verhandeling is toegespits op die uiteenlopende visies en representasies van diere in Marlene van Niekerk se bekroonde digbundel Kaar (2012). Die verhandeling begin met ’n inleiding wat die navorsingsplan van die studie uiteensit gevolg deur ’n teoretiese hoofstuk wat die artikulasie van mens-dier-studie met die ekokritiek saamvat. Mens-dier-studie is naamlik die teoretiese ontwikkeling wat die mees tersaaklike raamwerk bied vir ’n studie van Van Niekerk se gedigte oor diere. Spesifieke aandag word geskenk aan landskap en plek en insigte vanuit die biomusikologie wat relevant is vir sommige van die gedigte in Kaar wat bespreek word. Die hoofstuk oor taksonomieë en die uitdaging van hiërargieë in Van Niekerk se bundel word toegelig aan die hand van die gedigte “Herfsmeditasie 1” en “Etologie” wat onder meer die besinning by die digterlike spreker oor die plek van die mens (en niemenslike diere) binne die groter natuurlike omgewing ter diskussie stel asook die postkoloniale konteks van Suid-Afrika. Die derde hoofstuk is ’n studie van ses gedigte in Kaar wat aan voëls gewy word en die vierde hoofstuk verken die musikaliteit as aanknopingspunt tussen mens en dier en word toegespits op besprekings van die gedigte “Visioen”, “Brulpadda” en “Turdus merula”. Musikaliteit kan ook gesien word as ’n verdere poging om die natuur te probeer begryp. Dit is ’n verskynsel wat die mens met die natuur gemeen het en word ondersoek om meer te kan leer oor die natuur en ook oor die mens. Hierdie stelling sluit ook aan by die redenasie van Derrida dat die mens die volgeling is van die natuur. Die gevolgtrekking van die studie is dat die mens die natuur observeer en voorkom as volgeling eerder as bo-aan die hiërargie van lewe op aarde. Die afstand tussen mens en dier word hierdeur uitgedaag en die observasie van die natuur laat die digter en lesers met meer vrae as antwoorde oor die natuur. Dit laat ook vrae na vore kom oor wat “menswees” alles behels.
