ENGLISH SUMMARY: Should the human resource function of an organisation be challenged to defend the effectiveness of its selection procedure, it should be able to assemble credible evidence in this regard. Such evidence should include information regarding how the selection procedure was developed and empirically justified. Numerous guidance documents and psychometric literature, outline the key considerations required in such a process, and have been encapsulated in a checklist (developed in previous research). This checklist, referred to as the Jakob checklist, can be utilised to compare the development and current use of a selection procedure to the theoretical ideal, and in so doing point out any substantive and/or procedural shortcomings in the design and empirical justification of the selection procedure. Using the Jakob checklist, this study evaluated the effectiveness of a particular selection procedure of a financial services organisation, who has made the acquisition of their sales staff a strategic priority. This evaluation uncovered a number of shortcomings in the processes involved in the development and current use of this selection procedure. Since limited information was available on the validity of the procedure, the researcher also attempted to perform, where feasible, some of the analyses required to evaluate the efficiency and equity of the selection procedure. The results obtained, offered very weak empirical support for the validity of the selection procedure. However, it was highlighted that results needed to be interpreted with caution, due to the possibility that the poor validity coefficients obtained, in part, may have been due to the use of deficient criterion measures. Given the results obtained, it was concluded that The Company to a significant extent, lacks the evidence required to defend the selection procedure in terms of validity, utility and fairness. As a result, a number of recommendations have been made which imply significant redesign of the Financial Adviser selection procedure. However, before such recommendations are implemented, The Company is urged to repeat the analyses conducted as part of this study, using behaviourally-based criterion measures.
