ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Through the act of dwelling, this thesis investigates how a bodily experience of space can be mapped through photographic, land and sound ‘scapes’, and in doing so be responsible for the creation of place. The ‘scapes’ I speak of here can be seen in the three chapters that form the structure of this thesis: the first being an investigation into the grain of the image, the photographic scape (Chapter 1); the second being an exploration into the grain of the voice, the sound scape (Chapter 2); and the final scape, that acts as an intertwining of the grain of the image and voice, is the grain of the landscape (Chapter 3). I explore the notion that landscapes are narrated by means of our movement through them and that by means of dwelling within and walking through landscapes, the very grain of the landscape becomes the subject of research in a practice-based study. This thesis investigates my engagement with photography and sound as a means to explore the grain of the landscape as a temporal, enigmatic, sculptural form, with which we are inevitably entangled.
