Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Department of Psychology. NEPSY (Neuropsychological test) -- South Africa Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders -- South Africa Alcoholism in pregnancy UCTD Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2021. Alcohol use during pregnancy is a regular occurrence that often leads to a multitude of adverse pregnancy outcomes, which include developmental consequences that last a lifetime. Even though there have been studies focusing on the permanent and detrimental effects of prenatal alcohol consumption, limited research has been done on children with Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) in South Africa. This study aimed at using secondary data to determine whether the NEPSY-II could be a viable assessment instrument for diagnosing FASD in children and using these results to determine the developmental delays of children with FASD. Sixty-three children from Renosterberg, Northern Cape, South Africa were assessed using the Griffiths Mental Developmental Scales – Extended Revised and the NEPSY-II. Participants were then assigned to categories as follows: Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), partial FAS (pFAS), severe developmental delay, developmental delay, mild developmental delay and normal. The mothers or caregivers of the children were interviewed to obtain socio-demographic information and ascertain the extent of prenatal alcohol consumption. Fifty-two children were diagnosed with FAS, and another two children were diagnosed with pFAS. Thus, close to 86% out of the sixty-three children were diagnosed with either FAS or pFAS. It was noted that the children had difficulties especially with the Language and Practical Reasoning domains of the GMDS-ER. On the NEPSY-II the children’s poorest performance was in the Executive Function and Language domains. Only low to moderate correlations were found between the GMDS-ER and the NEPSY-II subtests, with the strongest correlations found between Practical Reasoning (GMDS-ER) and Theory of Mind (NEPSY-II), Language (GMDS-ER) and Theory of Mind (NEPSY-II), and Personal Social (GMDS-ER) and Inhibition (NEPSY-II). The results suggest that the NEPSY-II showed promising trends, but the time-consuming administration of the NEPSY-II and the limited research on this assessment tool indicated that the NEPSY-II could not be recommended as a superior psychological instrument in the diagnosis and assessment of children with FASD. While the NEPSY-II has a lot of potential to provide a comprehensive and in-depth assessment of strengths and weaknesses in children with FAS/D, more reliability and validity research needs to be done in South African communities using the NEPSY-II, as well as norm studies. Studies are currently under way to establish norms in South Africa; however, it will take years for these to be comparative to all South Africans. The GMDS-ER is currently the assessment tool that has been used in FASD research since 1999 in the South African context, so continued use of the GMDS-ER is encouraged.
