ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Pianist-répétiteur Gordon Jephtas’s (1943-1992) status as a classified ‘coloured’ in apartheid South Africa left him with very little opportunity to pursue a professional musical career in the country. In 1965, Jephtas left South Africa and consequently earned much success abroad as a sought-after vocal coach. In international opera circles, he worked with singers such as Renata Tebaldi, Franco Corelli, Marilyn Horne, Montserrat Caballé, Neil Shicoff and Luciano Pavarotti at various European and American opera houses. Jephtas’s career in opera has hitherto not been documented extensively. This thesis provides a biographical account of his life in opera based on the primary source material in the Eoan Group Archive housed at Stellenbosch University’s Documentation Centre for Music (DOMUS). In his 28-year correspondence (1962-1990) with Eoan Group soprano May Abrahamse (born 1930), Jephtas elaborated on a range of topics related and unrelated to opera. Evident in the correspondence is Jephtas’s coming to grips with his coloured identity. In the initial 13 years of the correspondence, Jephtas grappled with his colouredness due to internalised pejorative conceptualisations of coloured identity in apartheid South Africa. As he spent more time outside the country and its enforced modalities of apartheid thinking and practice, his relationship with his own colouredness changed significantly. By the end of the correspondence, Jephtas was immensely proud to be a coloured South African. Disclosing that cultural identity is not fixed, the Jephtas narrative illustrates that although environment contributes to identity formation, identity itself is ultimately shaped and re-shaped by the individual.
