Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences. School of Public Leadership. Interdisciplinary research -- Cape Town (South Africa) Sustainable development -- Cape Town (South Africa) Food security -- Cape Town (South Africa) Food supply -- Cape Town (South Africa) UCTD Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2021. ENGLISH SUMMARY: This thesis explores the factors that make an informal healthy food market in Khayelitsha a transformative space. The research was accomplished by employing a transdisciplinary approach, known as doing ‘science with society’. Following reflections on the embedded transdisciplinary research experience, the thesis also surfaces knowledge that emerged from the process. African cities are growing at unprecedented rates, resulting in complex urban dynamics, and problems to which there are no existing solutions. In South Africa, spatial and economic inequality persists, despite conventional state interventions. The dynamic, heterogenous and informal conditions that characterise African urbanism are often at odds with formalised structures. Inhabitants of urban informal life rely on these dynamic informal networks for income, food, and other service needs. The majority of urban South African households do not have access to nutritious and appropriate foods to meet their food security needs, for a variety of reasons that are discussed in this thesis. Food insecurity is not a stand-alone issue but is accompanied by many associated vulnerabilities, such as poverty and inequality. Transitions to sustainability and equity need to consider these complex, interrelated, and growing problems. Alternative responses are therefore needed that take into account the socio-cultural-political and economic landscape of a geographical setting. Urban experimentation offers a prompt to think out of the box and approach transformation through novel and context-based interventions. When paired with a transdisciplinary methodology, urban experimentation can produce information about transformation, which invites innovation in both what the intervention is and how it is approached/organised. In other words, it produces new knowledge on how to do new things in new ways. The available body of transdisciplinary research has not been able to address or guide the approach, in contexts of informality and vulnerability to the degree that these phenomena are found in the global South. This makes it difficult to conduct such research in Africa. Thus, this research aims to contribute to a greater body of transdisciplinary inquiry in the urban informal African context. The case study tracks the various experiments conducted around a healthy food market, Impilo Yabantu, between January and December 2019. The research explored the potential of the market, and the networks it sustained, to be an approach and an arena for transformation. The market created the potential for transformation, through learning and innovation. The resulting production of transformative knowledge highlights the enabling and constraining factors of the approach used. It also discusses the risks and recommendations when conducting experiments in a context such as Khayelitsha, South Africa. It finds that researchers must constantly reflect and adapt to change in spaces of uncertainty. Additionally, for such experiments to be effective and mitigate risk, they must be enabled by greater institutional flexibility. ISISHWANKATHELO NGESIXHOSA: Le thisisi ingophando iphengulula izinto ezenza imarike engamiselekanga yokutya okunempilo eseKhayelitsha ibe yindawo eza neenguqu ezibonakalayo. Olu phando luye lwafezekiswa ngokusebenzisa indlela yeenkalo eziliqela zolwazi, eyaziwa ngokuba ‘yinzululwazi nentlalo yoluntu’. Ngokulandela okubonakaliswa ngamava ophando olungeenkalo eziliqela zolwazi lwangaphambili, le thisisi ikwaveza nolwazi oluthe lwavela kwinkqubo yolu phando. Izixeko zase-Afrika zikhula ngamaqondo angazange abonwa ngaphambili, nto leyo ikhokelela kwiinguqu-nguquko zeemeko zasezidolophini ezixakayo, neengxaki ezingenazisombululo zazo zikhoyo. EMzantsi Afrika, ukungalingani ngokwentlalo nangokoqoqosho kuyagquba, nangona zikhona izenzo zongenelelo lombuso zesiqhelo. Iimeko ezingamiselekanga, eziguqu-guqukayo nezahluka-hlukeneyo ezinika ubunjani beemeko zasezidolophini e-Afrika zivamise ukungangqamani nezakheko ezimiselekileyo. Abantu abahlala kwiimeko ezingamiselekanga ezidolophini baxhomekeka kwezi ntungelwano zingamiselekanga ziguqu-guqukayo ukuze bafumane ingeniso, ukutya, nezinye izidingo zeenkonzo. Ubukhulu becala kumakhaya asezidolophini eMzantsi Afrika awanako ukufikelela kukutya okunesondlo nokufanelekileyo ukukhawulelana nezidingo zabo zokhuseleko lokufikelela ekutyeni, ngenxa yezizathu ezahluka-hlukeneyo ezixoxwayo kule thisisi ingophando. Ukungakhuseleki kokufikelela ekutyeni akungomba nje ohamba wodwa kodwa kukhatshwa zezinye iimeko zobuthathaka ezinxulumene nako, njengentlupheko nokungalingani. Ukutshintshela kwiimeko eziluqilima nakulingano kufuneka kunike ingqalelo ezi ngxaki zinobuzaza, zithungelanayo, kwaye zikhulayo. Iindlela ezizezinye zokukhawulelana nezo meko ziyadingeka ke ngoko ukuze kuthathelwe ingqalelo imeko yentlalo, yezamasiko, ezepolitiki, ezemeko yoqoqosho nezejografi. Uvavanyo lwasezidolophini lunikezela ngenkuthazo yokucinga ngobuchule nokwenziwa kweenguqu ngendlela yezenzo zongenelelo ezintsha ezingaqhelekanga nezisekelwe kwiimeko. Xa luhamba kunye nendlela yophando engeeenkalo eziliqela zolwazi, uvavanyo lweemeko zasezidolophini lungavelisa ulwazi ngokwenziwa kweenguqu, lwazi olo lumemelela ubuchule kwindlela olungayo ungenelelo nakwindlela olulungiselelwa ngayo. Ngamanye amagama, luvelisa ulwazi olutsha malunga neendlela zokwenza izinto ezintsha ngeendlela ezintsha. Ubuqu bolwazi kuphando olungeenkalo zolwazi eziliqela alukabinako ukujongana okanye ukukhokela le ndlela yokwenziwa kophando, kwiimeko zokungamiseleki nokuba nobuthathaka ukuya kufika kwindlela ezifumaneka ngayo kuMzantsi wehlabathi jikelele. Oku kwenza kube nzima ukuqhuba uphando olukumila kunje eMzantsi Afrika. Ngoko ke, olu phando lujonge ukufaka igalelo kubuqu obukhulu nangakumbi bokufunwa kolwazi kwindlela yophando olungeenkalo eziliqela zolwazi kwimeko yeendawo ezingamiselekanga ezidolophini zase-Afrika. Olu phononongo lulandela umkhondo weemvavanyo ezahluka-hlukeneyo eziqhutywe ngokungqonge imarike yokutya okunempilo, ebizwa ngokuba yi-Impilo Yabantu, phakathi kweyoMqungu neyoMnga 2019. Olu phando luphengulule okusemandleni ale marike, nothungelwano ethe yalufumana, ukuze zibe yindlela neqonga lokuziswa kweenguqu. Le marike idale ukuba nokwenzeka kokuziswa kweenguqu, ngokufunda nobuchule. Ukuveliswa kolwazi oluzisa iinguqu okusisiphumo soko kugqamisa izinto ezikhuthaza nezithintelayo kwindlela leyo isetyenziswayo. Kukwaxoxa nangemingcipheko neengcebiso xa kuqhutywa iimvavanyo kwimeko efana neyaseKhayelitsha, eMzantsi Afrika. Kufumanisa ukuba abaphandi bathi gqolo ukuqwalasela nokuba nako ukutshintsha kunye neenguqu kwiimeko zokungabi nakuqiniseka. Ngaphezu koko, ukuze iimvavanyo ezikumila kunjalo zisebenze nokuze kuncitshiswe imingcipheko, kufuneka zikhuthazwe kukuba nokuguqu-guquka kwamaziko okukhulu nangakumbi.
