Perspectives originating from the continent of Africa regarding play and health promotion through play, is the essence of this thesis. It was undertaken to extend on the plurality of knowledge and histories regarding play, and to explore the uniqueness and richness of play originating from the continent of Africa. The thesis comprises a literature review of perspectives mostly from outside of Africa, a scoping review on perspectives of play originating from the continent of Africa, and a systematic review on health promotion through play originating from the continent of Africa. Objectives : Scoping review: To highlight the use and value of play, any changes in play and play’s possibilities as an effective tool in human development, learning and occupation, originating from the continent of Africa. Systematic review: To examine evidence of play used in health promotion intervention with community-dwelling adults and children, originating from the continent of Africa, and to make recommendations for the future use of play as a health promotion tool. Method : Scoping review: Using the key words (Play) AND (Africa), applying the PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews guidelines and excluding an ‘English language only’ filter, source titles and abstracts were screened (1/1/2009-9/9/2019). This resulted in 17 004 potentially relevant sources. Full text screening followed, yielding 263 sources that were evaluated for eligibility (Peer-reviewed, published sources, containing perspectives on play originating from the continent of Africa). Systematic review: Following on from the scoping review’s selection of 127 eligible sources, these sources’ abstracts and titles were screened, followed by full text screening, guided by PRISMA-P 2015 Systematic Review guidelines, to identify sources for the systematic review. Eligible sources had a health promotion outcome and used play as an intervention tool with adults or children, originating from the continent of Africa; 23 sources were identified. Results : Scoping review: Of the 127 relevant sources (100 from Southern Africa), 76 qualitative, 28 quantitative and 23 mixed designs sources were discussed. Nine themes emerged: Who plays, Why play is engaged with, What play is intentionally used for, How individuals play, Play and adult related work skills, What is used in play, Where play occurs, When and for how long play occurs and Threats and barriers to play. Systematic review: All sources obtained A grading (JBI Recommendation Grades). Participants were varied in age, settings and numbers. Health topics were wide-ranging. Intervention providers were multi-sectorial. All types of play were apparent, mostly game play. Positive outcomes were reported in all sources. Conclusions Scoping review: Play was instrumental in human development, learning and occupation. Play removal was an effective discipline tool, emphasising how much children valued play. Adults still loved playing and wished they could play more. Safety concerns contributed to play occurring indoors rather than outdoors, despite outdoors being the most favourite place to play. Systematic review: Play as a health promotion tool is feasible, meaningful, appropriate and effective. As play elicited positive emotions, was interactive, varied and adaptable, health promotion programs could benefit from using play as an intervention tool. Both reviews: Limited research from African countries outside those in Southern Africa, requires attention. 2021-04-30T10:17:34Z 2021-04-30T10:17:34Z 2021-03 Thesis http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/110435 en_ZA application/pdf
