ENGLISH SUMMARY: Introduction: In an effort to combat cardio-vascular diseases (CVDs) in South Africa, the government selected a two-fold salt reduction strategy namely mandatory food reformulation and public education and awareness campaigns in order to decrease South Africans’ dietary salt intake. In 2013 South Africa became the first country in the world to set mandatory salt limits for the reformulation of a variety of processed foods. Rationale: It is essential for South Africa and the global environment for salt reduction initiatives to succeed in order to save people dying prematurely from CVDs and to strengthen the global nutrition quality and equality of all people. Ongoing surveillance and input from all key role-players are essential to ensure national success with this life-saving strategy and it is therefore essential to continue engaging the key role-players within the South African salt reduction strategy to establish possible barriers, to anticipate challenges, and to have recommendations in place to strengthen the current salt reduction strategy. Methods: In-depth, semi-structured interviews were used with a discussion guide and probes to collect the data. An additional short socio-demographic questionnaire was also included. A total of 12 key role-players from various fields within the salt reduction strategy environment were interviewed: academia (n = 7), government and policy related institutions (n = 2), research sector (n = 1) and non-governmental organizations (n = 2). Results: Overall perceptions of the current salt reduction strategy in South Africa were positive. Most of the participants agreed that the current strategy is the best approach to reduce the salt intake of the South African population. Participants however strongly believed that the strategy is not currently reinforced and that the initial momentum has been lost. Concerns were raised about the absence of consumer awareness campaigns, the population’s lack of knowledge regarding salt intake and its relations to health, and the challenges around the monitoring of salt/sodium in processed foods. Participants also highlighted effective multi-sectoral collaboration as a challenge as well as the lack of current studies in this field and existing data to be used for baseline studies. Conclusions: Key-role players in the salt reduction strategy are of the opinion that South Africa’s current salt reduction strategy is the correct approach to decrease the population’s salt intake. The initial phase of implementing the strategy has been successful, but the current perception is that government is not following through with this strategy. Several key areas that are needed for this strategy to succeed are being neglected, most notably the lack of consumer awareness and education campaigns, a decrease in collaboration efforts between the various sectors, especially government lack of involvement in facilitating collaboration as well as the ability of existing laboratories to monitor salt in processed foods.
