ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Plant life has long been a popular subject matter across visual art forms. This study explored certain historical, cultural and philosophical ideas relating to the depiction of plants, gardens and nature in art, which have been iconic or symbolic in specific art historical contexts. The garden is often thought of as a utopia and a refuge, a sentiment reflected in religious narratives, analogies, myths and legends, lending itself to ideas of the beautiful and the picturesque. It is through this ‘picturesque’ aesthetic that I contemplated the nature of my artistic practice. In this thesis, I consider how my foliagescapes function as a culmination of my own experience of the garden and the sense of belonging it evokes in me. Through the process of painting, drawing and printmaking, I attempt to articulate how my research influences the work that I create, and ultimately, how the subject matter of the garden can be utilised in the project of meaning making or used to subvert expected visual codes. The work is a practice-based study and discusses the work of three main artists: Deborah Poynton (Chapter 1), Gabrielle Kruger (Chapter 2) and Jennifer Packer (Chapter 3). By examining diverse perspectives, I endeavour to make sense of the significance of the garden and plants. The notion of the picturesque speaks to my method of making, wherein I focus on two-dimensional works, creating ‘pictures’ that are consciously (or subconsciously) By examining diverse perspectives, I endeavour to make sense of the significance of the garden and plants. The notion of the picturesque speaks to my method of making, wherein I focus on two-dimensional works, creating ‘pictures’ that are consciously (or subconsciously) constructed to elicit a feeling of repose. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Plantlewe is lank reeds ʼn gewilde onderwerp in alle visuelekunsvorme.
