ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Becoming a graduate is not as straightforward as it seems. This study focuses on what we can learn from senior students’ narratives about their needs towards preparation for employment. Although the graduate unemployment rate is not as concerning as the overall unemployment rate in South Africa, graduate unemployment is not conducive for future leadership and development of the country. Research shows that graduates feel unprepared to enter the job market. The rapidly changing world of work requires competent graduates with an expanded skill set. Different approaches to employability exist as to how employability competencies can be developed. However, the students’ voices regarding preparation for employment do not feature prominently in these discourses. By using the human capabilities approach as theoretical point of departure, a conceptual framework towards understanding students’ needs in preparing for employment was developed. The conceptual framework assisted in identifying themes regarding student needs towards being employable. Themes include students’ patterns of thinking, affect or emotion, career related behaviour, and material, personal and social resources. The narratives were collected through nine online open-ended interviews with six honours students and three postgraduate diploma students, from purposely selected university departments. The data were analysed through the listening guide method. Although needs in terms of personal and social resources were evident, it also became clear that preparing for employment is an individualised process of developing an ability to become employable and be employed. Positioning of the student’s needs in terms of resources to be employed furthermore suggested the formation of a successful professional identity, or not. Open-ended interviews, built on the method of narrative storytelling, can enhance our understanding of employability as a multi-faceted issue that extends beyond the prospective employer and the higher education institution, to include the student. The present study indicates that student confidence plays an important part towards a better understanding of students’ preparation for employment. This study presents a professional identity model as a method to guide a student in transitioning towards employment.
