Dept. of Philosophy: Centre for Applied Ethics. Bitcoin Fiat currency Libertarianism -- Ethical aspects UCTD Currency -- Social aspects Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2021. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The goal of this thesis is to investigate the ethics of Bitcoin and fiat currency from a libertarian perspective. To achieve this goal, I compare Bitcoin and fiat by investigating their social, environmental and legal effects as they relate to libertarianism. I argue that Bitcoin has positive effects on social aspects like privacy, inequality of opportunity and free speech. But when examining fiat currency as it relates to these social aspects, I argue it to be a source of adverse consequences except for physical cash which is an outlier. When exploring the implications of currency creation, I claim that both Bitcoin and fiat currency contribute negatively to the environment. Lastly, I explore the merits of the concern of criminals using Bitcoin. I argue it to be flawed as the same concern could be applied to fiat currency. The intention of this thesis is to add to the discussion on the role of government, Bitcoin as a tool for good and the potential dangers of a fiat currency system.
