ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The increasing demand for a better appearance and a beautiful smile has made tooth whitening, also referred to as tooth bleaching, a popular cosmetic dental procedure. Tooth bleaching may be performed or dispensed in surgery, but also increasingly takes places through the use of over-the-counter bleaching products. This thesis will provide an overview of the history of dental modification and the different methods of tooth bleaching, as well its negative and positive effects. It will then go on to provide an ethical evaluation of both in-surgery tooth bleaching, and over-the-counter tooth bleaching products, from a principlist perspective, and will make recommendations on the basis of this evaluation. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die toenemende eis vir 'n beter voorkoms en 'n mooi glimlag het tandbleiking 'n gewilde kosmetiese tandheelkundige prosedure gemaak. Tandbleiking kan in die tandheelkundige kliniek uitgevoer of uitgeoefen word, maar vind ook toenemend plaas deur middel van oor-die-toonbank bleikprodukte. Hierdie tesis bied 'n oorsig van die geskiedenis van tandheelkundige aanpassing en die verskillende metodes van tandbleiking, asook die negatiewe en positiewe effekte daarvan. Dit gaan dan voort met 'n etiese evaluering van sowel oor-die-toonbank tandbleikprodukte as ook professionele tandbleiking, vanuit 'n beginselperspektief (‘principlism’), en sal aanbevelings maak op grond van hierdie evaluering.
