ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Research in the field of musicians’ health investigates musicians’ performance-related health problems in order to promote healthy performance techniques and practices, and optimise performance. Musculoskeletal symptoms (MSS) have been identified as the most prevalent health problem experienced by musicians, including string players. Within the musicians’ health literature on string players, research examining double bass players in particular is scarce. This embedded mixed methods study aimed to determine and explore the prevalence of MSS in double bass players. Data were gathered through the creation and electronic distribution of a survey consisting of two standardized questionnaires and additional questions designed specifically for this study, which coincided with the start of the COVID- 19 pandemic. Survey data on the prevalence, severity, anatomical locations, and possible risk factors of the MSS of participants were analysed quantitatively, utilising descriptive statistics and non-parametric statistical testing. A qualitative thematic analysis approach was used to explore the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on double bassists’ MSS. Findings include that the self-reported prevalence of MSS in double bassists is similar to the high prevalence of MSS in the general population, musicians, and string players. Double bassists do not seek treatment options despite the high prevalence and serious impact of MSS on their personal and professional lives. The severity of their MSS was low, and the most common anatomical region in which they experience MSS is the upper body, specifically the shoulders and lower back. The only significant risk factor identified in this study was the age of participants, with older participants experiencing fewer MSS. The lack of risk factors identified could indicate that MSS is less dependent on a player’s physical characteristics, instrument variations or playing position, and that factors such as appropriate muscular exertion, balanced body biomechanics, and proprioceptive awareness could be better predictors of MSS in musicians. The interactive nature of individual variables should be considered when studying double bassists risk factors for MSS. The effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on double bassists’ MSS was largely positive, as participants were presented with an opportunity to rest, and to establish healthier practice-related habits and techniques. While some findings of this study were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, the survey tool created to analyse double bassists’ MSS, as well as the dataset collected could be used in further research on the MSS of double bass players. Exploring the prevalence, severity, and risk factors of the MSS experienced by double bassists can inform pedagogy, and optimize the performance of this unique instrument.
