ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation is an in-depth look into the effects that market driven decisions related to the spending of research and development funds have had on the performance of modern processors, especially as applied to the scientific user. This is placed in the context of the post-Moore era we are living in. The dissertation establishes trends over the last few generations of processors. By using this data to predict future trends it enables the scientific user to make better decisions on his future computing needs.
