Van der Bank, Francois Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences. Dept. of Agricultural Economics. Competency models Farmers -- Training -- South Africa Human capital -- South Africa Agriculture -- Economic aspects -- South Africa UCTD Thesis (MScAgric)--Stellenbosch University, 2022. ENGLISH SUMMARY : A current topic of debate in South Africa revolves around land reform and empowerment of previously disadvantaged communities. Critics of land reform hold up failed land reform projects as examples of why the current strategy is not feasible. Against this backdrop, the established farms in the country are reducing in number with the remaining farms increasing in size as their competitors fail due to price pressures. This is resulting in a greater number of large enterprises that require extensive management skills to run effectively. From these two points, it is clear that an in-depth study of the requirements for successful farming in South Africa was required. This study set out to develop a competency model detailing what competencies are required by South African farmers and the behaviours that enabled these competencies. The study used the Critical Incidence Technique (CIT) to determine core competencies and identify behaviours that lead to successful farming. The study started by compiling a literature-based model identifying which skills and attributes lead to successful farming. This information is ordered and sorted around a framework including three main dimensions: the Leadership dimension, the Economic dimension, and the Technical dimension. Each of the above dimensions are based on a collection of associated competencies. Once the model was defined, a sample group of successful farmers (within several industries) was approached for interviews. The interviews sought to determine the views of the successful farmers on competencies required for long term success. The CIT was then used to determine the key competencies leading to sustainable success. Following this, the results of these interviews were inserted into the Atlas TI-9 program for qualitative analysis and where all relevant information was coded. A code report was generated by Atlas TI-9. This report allowed for the efficient allocation of sub-competencies into competency clusters. Finally, the report was then used to match the extracted competencies to the initial framework. By using the same framework for both the literature-based model and the research-based model, the research could draw comparisons between what was previously identified in the literature and what new information or insights were discovered in practice – especially through the inclusion of the behavioural dimension. This led to the conclusion that the key to success in farming lies not only in the technical or economic knowledge of the farmer but, importantly, also in their behaviours as leaders on the farm. This discovery provides new insights into what could have been missing from agricultural ventures that fail, even though these ventures might have abundant technical and economic assistance.
