ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A small percentage of students who commence with music learning persevere and continue with tuition in the long-term, to make a career choice towards music in the classical/jazz genres. The purpose of this research was to determine how, and to what degree, the direct environment (in this case, the microsystem) influences the motivation of the student musician/prospective professional musician in the South African context. This study used Self-Determination Theory, specifically the Causality Orientations Theory, to explore the impact that parental figures, music teachers and instruments have on the motivations of students to pursue a career in music. In this quantitative study, an online survey was conducted. Sixty-one South African professional musicians participated. The questionnaire focused on their background, perceived basic psychological needs support (BPNS), extrinsic controlled regulations and intrinsic motivation, and perceived autonomy support. The outcome revealed that high experience of the BPNS from the teacher and instrument is essential for intrinsic, long-term motivation and an autonomous choice of music as career. The relationships with the teacher and instrument (relatedness) seem more important and necessary to be experienced first, for the further experiences of the other two BPN, namely autonomy and competence. Further, the bond/relationship with the instrument plays a slightly more important role than the teacher, and specifically relatedness and autonomy experienced from the instrument may compensate for less BPNS experienced from the teacher. Self-regulatory levels were perceived as high in intrinsic motivation and autonomy, which correlates with the high experience of the BPNS. Further, high experience of autonomy support, and minimal extrinsic controlled psychological support from the teacher and parental figures were indicated, and therefore needed to facilitate integration and support autonomous behaviour and long-term intrinsic motivation. Goals support (identified regulations) from the teacher, specifically as a positive form of extrinsic controlled support, promotes motivation, whereas other negative forms of control seem to be non-contributing and may be de-motivational. Positive controlled support, such as praise (introjected regulation) and rewards (external regulation) were not tested and should be investigated in a further study, with regard to the effect thereof on motivation, as opposed to the effect of negative control (guilt inducement and fear threatening with punishment).
