ENGLISH SUMMARY: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrine disorders affecting women today. The disorder presents with a myriad of symptoms, such as hirsutism, weight gain or acne, that may affect a woman’s self-image and self-esteem. Beyond physical symptoms, the disorder has been linked to development of mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety. The disorder also causes problems with fertility, a factor that may have a serious impact on the identity and mental health of women with the disorder. There are very few studies conducted amongst women with PCOS in South Africa, despite the fact that a reported 35-40 percent of fertility-related cases are linked to PCOS. The high prevalence of PCOS in South Africa coupled with limited research into South African women’s experiences with PCOS displays an obvious gap in research that it is necessary to fill. Body mapping is a method of qualitative data collection that focuses on a participant’s subjective experience. The process is a collaborative one that could create a sense of empowerment in the participant. Thus, the aim of the study was to explore the perceived self-image and self-esteem of women diagnosed with PCOS through the process of body mapping. This thesis presents data collected from 11 South African women diagnosed with PCOS. The data was collected using the method of body mapping and audio-recorded, semistructured interviews. Participants were recruited via regular posts to an online support group and through snowball sampling. Data were then transcribed and analysed using a process of thematic analysis aided by ATLAS.ti. The process of data analysis revealed three main themes; (1) Impact of PCOS on women’s quality of life, (2) Effect of PCOS on women’s self-image, self-esteem and identity, and (3) Potential of body mapping as a data collection tool and avenue for catharsis. These results were then discussed through the pre-established theoretical framework. This framework incorporates understandings from self-discrepancy theory, gender schema theory and social comparison theory. The results highlighted the detrimental impact of PCOS on several domains of women’s quality of life, particularly self-image, self-esteem and identity. This suggests the need for wider understanding and more compassionate care for women with PCOS. Several of the findings of this study are not present in the literature, suggesting the need for further research. The process of body-mapping was widely enjoyed by the participants in the study, who spoke to its perceived value for processing and understanding their experiences. The participants also described the experience as therapeutic. These findings provide support for the value of the data collection tool and the recommendation that it be used in further research. The perceived therapeutic value also suggests its use as a potential tool for intervention and therapeutic practice.
