ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Die troebel tyd by Ingrid Winterbach was published in South Africa in December 2018. Only a month later, Michel Houellebecq's Sérotonine appears, a French novel that has its origins in a context that differs in many respects from the South African context in which Winterbach works. Despite obvious differences in style and plot, there are similarities between the two novels in terms of their themes. This study compares the way in which the novels depict themes reflecting the Anthropocene, society, interpersonal relationships, spirituality and depression. Although each of these themes can be studied separately, they never function completely independently from one another other in the context of each novel. Edgar Morin's complexity theory provides a good theoretical framework within which the thematic coherence can be studied. At the same time, the thesis seeks to contribute in an interdisciplinary manner to the application of complexity theory to literature. By looking at the way in which all the above themes fit together and seemingly contribute to a prevailing esprit du temps that is particularly marked by depression, the thesis casts a holistic view on the depiction of contemporary Western society in Sérotonine and Die troebel tyd. Given the confluence of complexity theory and the two novels, the thesis also offers a representation of the extent to which a novel itself can be regarded as a complex system. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die troebel tyd deur Ingrid Winterbach verskyn in Desember 2018. Slegs ʼn maand later verskyn Michel Houellebecq se Sérotonine, ʼn Franse roman wat sy oorsprong het in ʼn konteks wat in vele opsigte anders is as die Suid-Afrikaanse konteks waarbinne Winterbach werk. Ten spyte van ooglopende verskille wat styl en intrige betref, is daar tog ooreenkomste tussen die twee romans wat betref tematiek. Hierdie studie vergelyk die wyse waarop die romans temas uitbeeld rakende die Antroposeen, die samelewing, interpersoonlike verhoudings, spiritualiteit en depressie. Hoewel elkeen van hierdie temas afsonderlik bestudeer kan word, is hulle egter nie nooit ten volle onafhanklik van mekaar in die konteks van elke roman nie. Edgar Morin se kompleksiteitsteorie bied ʼn goeie teoretiese raamwerk waarbinne die tematiese samehang bestudeer kan word. Die tesis poog dus terselfdertyd om op ʼn interdissiplinêre wyse by te dra tot die toepassing van kompleksiteitsteorie op die letterkunde. Gegewe die samekoms van kompleksiteitsteorie en die twee romans, bied die tesis ook ʼn voorstelling van die mate waarin ʼn roman self as komplekse sisteem beskou kan word. RÉSUMÉ: Die troebel tyd d'Ingrid Winterbach est publié en Afrique du Sud en décembre 2018. Un mois plus tard seulement, paraît Sérotonine de Michel Houellebecq, un roman français qui trouve ses origines dans un contexte qui diffère à bien des égards du contexte sud-africain dans lequel travaille Winterbach. Malgré des différences évidentes dans le style et l'intrigue, les deux romans présentent des ressemblances au niveau de leurs thèmes. Cette étude compare la manière dont les romans dépeignent les thèmes reflétant l'Anthropocène, la société, les relations interpersonnelles, la spiritualité et la dépression. Bien que chacun de ces thèmes puisse être étudié séparément, ils ne fonctionnent jamais complètement indépendamment les uns des autres dans le contexte de chaque roman. La théorie de la complexité d'Edgar Morin fournit un cadre théorique intéressant dans lequel la cohérence thématique peut être étudiée. En même temps, le mémoire cherche à contribuer de manière interdisciplinaire à l'application de la théorie de la complexité à la littérature. En examinant la manière dont tous les thèmes susmentionnés s'imbriquent et semblent contribuer à un esprit du temps dominant, particulièrement marqué par la dépression, le mémoire jette un regard holistique sur la représentation de la société occidentale contemporaine dans Sérotonine et Die troebel tyd. Étant donné la confluence de la théorie de la complexité et les deux romans, le mémoire offre également une représentation de la mesure dans laquelle un roman en soi peut être considéré comme un système complexe.
