Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Centre for Health Professions Education. Home visits (Education) -- Medical personnel Learning disabled -- Services for Patient-centered health care UCTD Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2022. ENGLISH SUMMARY: The global call to transform health professions education to address health inequalities and promote social justice has led to health professions education encouraging curricula reform and renewal to integrate more opportunities for transformative learning. Medical students at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Stellenbosch University participate in a 13 -week primary health care clinical rotation, which is shared between the fields of Family Medicine, Public Health, and Disability and Rehabilitation. During the middle phase, students are placed in rural areas in the Western and Northern Cape in South Africa. In these settings, students are required to go on home visits to persons with disabilities and critically reflect on this experience, as part of their prescribed learning activities. Medical students at SU are exposed to very few home visits during their undergraduate training and no formal research has been conducted on this experience during their primary health care clinical rotation. Furthermore, a need to understand the value of this learning activity from the students’ perspective and explore their perceptions regarding the influence of home visits in their development as a doctor was identified. This qualitative study aimed to offer a comprehensive analysis of the students’ experiences and evaluate whether this learning activity facilitated transformative learning. Four themes were identified during the thematic analysis of written critical reflections submitted shortly after going on the home visits as well as semi-structured individual interviews conducted two months later. These themes included the educational value, opportunities topractice person-centred communication, a positive collaborative experience, and finally, the transformative learning experience that going on home visits had on students’ personal and professional development. These findings offered similar results to those of other studies and presented student-voiced motivations for including more home visits in undergraduate medical student training. However, the need to integrate holistic person-centred frameworks into their existingconsultation approaches and how this may contribute to their patient management in other clinical contexts can be further explored. Further studies on the presence of disorienting dilemmas within a curriculum challenged to transform health professions education and how these contribute towards students’ performance and wellbeing can be valuable to determine the type of support needed to guidestudents on their journey of being and becoming a doctor. Semi-gestrukturere individuele onderhoude was gevoer twee maande later.
