ENGLISH SUMMARY: The global energy transition is underway. Many societies like South Africa, are decarbonising their energy systems. Questions have arisen around how to mitigate and plan for a transition to a sustainable society, and ensure justice is incorporated.. Just Transitions is a framework which has been used widely today, and is commonly understood as structural changes which occur to create a more sustainable and equitable society. It is a useful term that addresses the complexities which go beyond decarbonisation and incorporates justice elements. There are dimensions of justice associated with a just transition, being, climate, environment and energy, and they can help address the complexities found in a transition to a low carbon economy. These justice frameworks can also be used to provide an understanding of how the just transition is contested and navigated in South Africa. Climate justice helps readers understand that the climate crisis goes beyond the idea that it is an environmental issue, but it is also a political and social issue. . Environmental justice ensures that ecological disparities are fairly distributed over society, so that minority groups (especially those in the global south) do not only hold all the negative burdens of climate change. Energy justice ensures that all individuals have access to safe, affordable and clean electricity, and advocates for justice across the whole energy supply chain, with newer decarbonised energy systems. South Africa is a developing country that faces an array of complexities, ranging from path dependency, which is understood as South Africa’s historical dependence on coal production, high levels of poverty and inequality, including income inequality. Policy commitments and public participation from key stakeholders in South Africa, has demonstrated that the energy transition is underway, however, the fields of justice need to be better understood and incorporated in South Africa’s energy transition to ensure it is indeed just. A qualitative examination is conducted of the just transitions literature and how it has evolved and been used in countries like South Africa. It reveals the development of policy and practice to date around the just transition, and also displays how the framings of justice can help with mitigating the challenges South Africa faces.
