ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The use of social media and Social Networking has taken the world over, and during the National Lockdown Period, this became evident. During the National Lockdown Period informal traders was not able to trade in a normal manner, and the reason for this was the COVID-19 pandemic and the serious health issues which were attached to it. Social Media and Social Networking was used as the primary communication platform for informal traders to resume their economic activities during the Lockdown Period. As the informal economy contributes a large part of economic development, the aim of this study was to investigate how local informal traders used social media and social networking to trade informally and to access job opportunities during the lockdown period through the use social networking. The study concluded and confirmed that social media was largely used during National Lockdown Period and this had a positive impact on small businesses. Recommendations based on how informal traders can continue to use social media and social networking as communication platforms were made to improve trading skills.
