ENGLISH SUMMARY: This qualitative research study adopted a phenomenological approach in order to explore the value of instructional video-recorded demonstrations used by dentistry students amongst certain ongoing challenges in a prosthetic restorative techniques module at the University of the Western Cape (UWC). Content overload, limited resources, and time restrictions are some of the experienced challenges that hinder these students’ development of practical skills. Perceptions of the students and facilitators, as well as their experiences of how limited access to timeous guidance and feedback were also explored. The intention was to investigate the purpose and impact of these instructional videos to improve skills training in the prosthetic department of the Dental Faculty, and to understand whether it can make up for the lack of practical skills if used as a complementary or replacement tool. Furthermore, the aim was to see whether the videos bridge the perceived gap between theory and practice. The data collection process consisted of four online focus group discussions with a population that included the facilitators of this module, as well as the first six interested students in each class (third-, fourth- and fifth-year dental students) who volunteered to participate in the study. The sample populations were based on the participants’ distinct experiences with the trial video demonstrations. Being in the same teaching and learning environment as these participants, allowed me a good understanding of what these participants expressed. Everyone was allowed adequate time to contribute, as variety and diversity of opinions were encouraged during the in-depth interactive focus group discussions, which contributed relevant and valuable perspectives from each participants’ exposure to this teaching tool. The data were analysed thematically, and involved basic as well as systematic coding of the participants’ descriptions, while keywords, occurrences, behaviours and interactions were noted. Supplementing traditional teaching and live demonstrations with the instructional videos helps with time management, and allows students to better grasp difficult concepts which therefore contribute to a less stressful teaching and learning environment. This method promotes safe patient treatment, as these students master the complex skills necessary for clinical competency. Currently, no literature is published on the experiences and perceptions of students and teachers using instructional video demonstrations in this module at UWC’s Dental Faculty. I am of the opinion that these improvements could assist the institution with the Dental Faculty’s development and encourage the use instructional video demonstrations to enhance teaching and learning processes. However, further research after implementation is suggested to confirm this.
