ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Throughout recorded history, South African “coloured” identities have been precariously positioned midway between “black” and “white”, within a hierarchy of racialisation. Contemporary conceptualisations of “colouredness” have evolved to acknowledge the intricacies of what it means to operate under the term “coloured”, a contentious term which carries a multitude of meanings across this diverse socio-cultural group. The oversimplified definition of “colouredness” as the result of “race mixture” is rooted in a longstanding history of subjugation, a history that continues to influence contemporary understandings and expressions of what it means to be “coloured”. Thus, in the widely accessible and popular media, expressions of “coloured” cultural experiences are often framed within contexts where the numerous forms of violence enabled by colonialism and apartheid are foregrounded as defining features of “colouredness”. This thesis consists of a collection of short stories written in response to dominant literary expressions of “coloured” cultural experiences. The contents are drawn from personal, subjective experiences, and they attempt to underline the particularities that influence individual cultural identities. My insistence on singularity is to foreground the multiplicity of cultural existences that operate under the term “coloured”, and thus contests the idea that “coloured” identities are fixed and homogenous. Alongside fragments of formal theoretical reflections, the stories simultaneously engage and contest narrative patterns of foregrounding particular forms of violence for the authentication of “coloured” experiences, and attempts to accommodate a wider range of experiences which can also be recognised as “coloured”, and not excluded due to a lack of these particular forms of violence.
