Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Department of Psychology. Schizophrenia -- Social aspects -- Limpopo (South Africa) Intervention (Psychology) Mental health -- Limpopo (South Africa) Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2022. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study explored the beliefs of Xikundu village residents with regards to schizophrenia. Its aims were to explore the beliefs of Xikundu village residents with regards to individuals living with schizophrenia, and whether these beliefs contribute to their understanding of schizophrenia. It further explored whether these beliefs influence treatment seeking behaviour and whether it contributes to barriers in community-based interventions. The focus of this study was on individuals who have lived in the Xikundu community, Limpopo, South Africa most of their lives. The study was conducted both in person and telephonically. The study consisted of 18 participants to which each was asked if they had prior knowledge about schizophrenia. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews and were analysed using Thematic Analysis. The social constructionist theory was used to frame the study’s results. Based on the results, it can be deduced that the beliefs about schizophrenia among the residents of the Xikundu community lie particularly in them perceiving schizophrenia to have an aetiology of spiritual, psychological and genetic causes. A clear distinction is made outlining culture, family and traditions to largely shape the beliefs of schizophrenia. It was concluded that these beliefs play a role in determining help-seeking behavious and preference in treatment options.
