ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis discussed the measurement of high-frequency disturbances in power networks referred to as ”supraharmonics” in the power quality community. Supraharmonics are caused by modern power converter based loads and generators connected to the distribution power network. The amplitudes of the supraharmonics caused are very small compared to the fundamental 50 Hz grid frequency component. Thus, measuring these small signals in the presence of the fundamental power signal is a non-trivial task. All parameters related to frequency measurements, such as sampling frequency, Fourier transforms, windowing, aliasing and quantization was discussed. It was found that various parameters, such as measurement length, windowing and frequency grouping do affect the output spectrum of the measurement in a significant manner, and it was concluded that a measurement standard is required. At the time of writing, no measurement standard exists for the supraharmonic frequency range. All currently proposed measurement methods were evaluated and discussed with the CISPR 16 standard showing promising results in terms of accuracy and the type of signals which can be measured. It was shown that quantization and specifically quantization noise imposes a hardware limitation to the measurement of small signals. An active high pass filter was designed and tested as a solution to the quantization noise problem, which enabled the accurate measurement of supraharmonics. The supraharmonic emissions of various inverters were measured using the active high pass filter in both residential grid and microgrid environments. The measurement results showed inverters differ notably in their ability to filter out the generated supraharmonics and that some inverters do exceed the current compatibility levels for non-intentional emissions in the supraharmonic range. AFRIKAANS OPSOMMING: In hierdie tesis word die die meeting van ho¨e-frekwensie versteurings in krag netwerke bespreek. In die krag kwaliteit gemeenskap word hierdie ho¨e-frekwensie versteurings ”Supraharmonieke” genoem. Supraharmonieke word veroorsaak deur omsetter gebaseerde laste en generators wat aan die kragnetwerk gekoppel word. Die versteurings in hierdie frekwensie band is baie klein teenoor die fundamentele 50 Hz netwerk frekwensie. Om hierdie klein seine in die teenwoordigheid van die groot fundamentele krag sein te meet is nie ’n triviale taak nie. Al die parameters wat verband hou met ’n frekwensie meeting, soos monster frekwensie, Fourier transformasie, vensters, aliasing, en kwantisering, word in hierdie tesis behandel. Daar was gevind dat verskeie parameters, soos meeting lengte, vensters en frekwensie groepering die uittree spektrum op ’n merkbare manier kan affekteer, dus word ’n metings standaard vereis. Teen die tyd wat hierdie tesis geskryf was, het geen metingstandaard vir supraharmonieke bestaan nie. Al die voorgestelde metingmetodes in literatuur was in hierdie tesis vergelyk en bespreek. Die CISPR 16 metode het belowende resultate getoon. Daar is ook gewys dat kwantisering en meer spesifiek kwantisering geraas ’n hardeware beperking op die meeting van klein siene veroorsaak. ’n Hoogdeurlaatfilter was ontwerp, getoets as ‘n oplossing vir die kwantisering geraas probleem. Die filter het die akkurate meting van Supraharmonieke moontlik gemaak. Die supraharmoniese emissies van verskeie wisselrigters was gemeet met die hoogdeurlaatfilter in beide mikronetwerk en residensi¨ele omgewings. Die metings resultate het gewys dat wisselrigters opmerklik verskil in hulle vermo¨e om supraharmonieke wat hulle genereer uit te filter. Party wisselrigters het ook die huidige verenigbaarheidsvlakke oorskry.
