Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences. School of Public Leadership. Energy development -- Environmental aspects -- Western Cape (South Africa) Sustainable development -- Western Cape (South Africa) Renewable energy sources -- Western Cape (South Africa) UCTD Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2022. ENGLISH SUMMARY: Energy sustains human livelihoods and is a critical component of environmental sustainability. Unbridled population growth in African cities, combined with the recent COVID-19 pandemic, has pushed many people into energy poverty. The living lab concept has been identified as having the potential to provide a platform for bringing together the community, government, private companies, and non-governmental organisations to build knowledge, test technologies, and improve energy insecurity. The application of the living lab concept in the sector is still limited, despite its emerging status. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to investigate the potential roles of stakeholders and end-users in a gendered energy living lab to achieve the security of energy services. The study first undertook a systematic and semi-systematic literature review to understand (i) the extent of the living lab concept and how it’s applied in the energy sector, and (ii) to examine the stakeholders involved in energy living labs. The analysis revealed that the concept still lacks a universally agreed-upon conceptualisation. The application of the living lab approach is evolving and it is applied in diverse fields and contexts around the world. Eight categories of stakeholders were identified in energy living lab studies. Moreover, the sampled studies revealed how there is a lack of transparency in the identification and recruitment processes of stakeholders in energy living labs. Using a case study approach, the study also developed an in-depth understanding of GENS living lab and examined the roles of different stakeholders and end-users in the Groenheuwel (Western Cape, South Africa) case study. This was the third objective. Document analysis, one field observation session, and 19 interviews with end-users and stakeholders were undertaken. The findings revealed that the GENS living lab was initiated by Stellenbosch University in 2019/2020 and the project is funded by the NRF and British Council. A community media outlet, Radio KC, became one of the core partners in 2020. The living lab stakeholders represent diverse fields and sectors. The study showed that living lab actor roles are action-based. The GENS researchers were key in initiating communication and facilitating activities in the living lab. End-users (GENS youth champions and co-researchers) served as informants and testers, while stakeholders served as enablers, providers, researchers, and utilisers. The evidence revealed that certain actors played multiple roles, and that because participation was voluntary, some stakeholders were unsure of their roles. Although the study findings do not provide a complete picture of actor roles and their impact in a fully developed living lab, the evidence provides insight to support the setup and management of an energy living lab in urban Africa to enhance local development and achieve sustainable energy for all. Agt kategoriee belanghebbendes is in energielewende laboratoriumstudies geidentifiseer.
