Faculty of Engineering. Dept. of Industrial Engineering. Asset management Gamification Simulation games UCTD Thesis (MEng) -- Stellenbosch University, 2022. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Asset management (AM) encompasses a larger spectrum of risk, finance, and maintenance factors that make managing assets a complex and integrated multidisciplinary process. Determining the long-term implications of decisions made at a prior point in the asset life cycle remains a difficult task to quantify and predict. An industrial and educational challenge is to provide holistic training and insight in a comprehensible way for developing learner understanding and knowledge about the larger system’s effect and practical implications of decision-making across the multidisciplinary facets of AM. This leads to the need for improved adult learning alternatives for bridging the AM knowledge-to-skills gap that remains prevalent in the industry. In this study, it is argued that gamification may present a suitable alternative for addressing this challenge. Arguments are presented in support of gamification, based on the success of existing games within industrial environments and the respective state of the art. The thesis presents the design and development of a simulation-based game of AM using an architecture for bidirectional learning for serious game development. The game is developed using system dynamics (SD). The study further explores the applicability of SD methods to model an AM game. Two software modelling tools, Vensim and AnyLogic are used to explore the benefits and limitations of SD methods to simulate the dynamics being considered. The strength of the SD method lies in its ability to enhance and simplify learning in complex systems. It is further argued that the welldocumented history, existing literature, and past research related to AM provide sufficient resources in support of a gamification approach whereby principles and decision-making can be explained through an interactive simulation-based game incorporating gamification elements.
