ENGLISH SUMMARY: Human Resource Management (HRM) in South Africa possesses the characteristics of a profession, and yet continues to operate as an occupation and is not legally recognised as a profession. This study aimed to identify and illustrate perceptions held by HRM practitioners towards the professionalisation of HRM in South Africa. In addition, the study aimed to ascertain the perception that HRM practitioners have about their work and the status of HRM practices in South Africa to establish a benchmark for future research. The study was necessitated due to the lack of information on the current perceptions of HRM practitioners regarding the professionalisation and the status of HRM practices. A quantitative, non-experimental cross-sectional design was used to obtain a baseline of the current perceptions held by HRM practitioners working in the domain of HRM in South Africa, including members of South African Board of People Practices (SABPP). A total of 370 responses were received for the study. The findings revealed the perceptions that HRM practitioners in South Africa had towards HRM practices and the professionalisation of HRM. A profile of HRM practitioners was obtained, based on the results of the demographical and biographical information of the practitioners. Findings showed that the majority of HRM practitioners are in support of the professionalisation of HRM in South Africa. The study has practical implications for the SABPP, HRM organisation, and HRM practitioners and can inform strategy and decision-making on whether to formally pursue statutory recognition for HRM or to proceed with HRM as a non-statutory profession. The findings of this study can also be used by organisations and the SABPP to inform the standards of education and training for HRM practitioners and can serve as a baseline for future research on the HRM profession in South Africa.
