ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study focuses on the emergency remote teaching and learning (ERT/L) student support experience of students at a private Higher Education (HE) institution in the Western Cape, South Africa, during the COVID-19 pandemic when ERT/L was introduced. During this period, although student support was provided, it was from the perspective of what the institution deemed appropriate, important and necessary, without consulting the students. The type of support provided may not have been sufficient to meet students’ needs. The study, which used a qualitative phenomenological approach, aimed to investigate students’ experiences of the student support provided during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study’s main research question was: What was the emergency remote learning support experiences of students at a South African private higher education institution? To address this question, 13 purposively sampled students from a private higher education institution were interviewed about their student support experiences. The aim of the study was to determine whether or not students’ expectations were met, along with identifying their support needs during a period of ERT/L. A further objective was to determine whether there is congruence between student support needs versus the support provided by the institution. This study argues that students support seems to be provided from the perspective of higher education institutions, without regard to what a student considers necessary and relevant. The research results showed that certain expectations, especially in the area of communication, were not met. Using an interpretivist paradigmatic lens, the study uses Braun and Clarke's six-step thematic analysis process to frame the thematic analysis method. The results are intended to provide recommendations on how to better prepare this specific institution to adopt a more aligned and holistic student support service and to better prepare for future contingencies when ERT/L needs to be implemented, which should meet students’ needs and requirements, as opposed to what the institution seems appropriate and sufficient.
