ENGLISH SUMMARY: Humanity finds itself in an era of profound technological advancements and rapid transformation in terms of the way society works, lives, communicates, and travels. Dubbed the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), the context is characterised by exponential technological progress, which in its velocity, breadth, depth, and systems impact is transforming entire systems, within and across companies, industries, society, and countries. Leadership and management practice, however, lags in its advancement of theory and practice comparable to 4IR’s exponential advancement. The cognitive processes, as the bedrock of leadership and management behaviour, highlight the centrality of the intelligence paradigm, referring in this context to the general mental capability, involving the ability to reason, plan, solve problems, think abstractly, comprehend complex ideas, learn quickly, and learn from experience. This study set out to understand how organisational leaders should prepare themselves to navigate 4IR, with the subsequent objective to establish a 4IR integrated intelligence taxonomy and measurement framework for top management. The methodological approach consisted of two parts. For Part 1, a Delphi study was undertaken to develop categories of intelligence deemed necessary for leadership and management practitioners to navigate 4IR, and, for Part 2, a measurement instrument was developed to operationalise the intelligences and test them empirically by means of partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). The Delphi produced a 4IR Intelligence Taxonomy of nine themes. During the SEM process, three higher-order constructs were developed, each containing three of the nine themes, namely Episteme-Analytical Intelligence (Complexity Intelligence + Inquiry Intelligence + Critical Intelligence), Techne-Inventive Intelligence (Futures Intelligence + Adaptive Intelligence + Creative Intelligence), and Phronesis-Synergic Intelligence (Emotional Intelligence + Ethical Intelligence + Collaborative Intelligence). The final PLS-SEM results concluded that the measurement model adequately meets all the requirements for rejection of the null hypotheses, and the emerging model is thereby accepted as foundational theoretical model. The study concludes with a 4IR Integrated Intelligence Framework for top management indicating the three distinct domains, consisting of three sub-domains each, which make up the cognitive disposition in relation to navigating 4IR. Recommendations are for top management to undertake a 4IR cognitive disposition 360° assessment, cascade 4IR cognitive disposition assessments to next levels of management, increase the use of experiential learning for 4IR leadership development, increase the use of action learning for 4IR leadership development, establish a 4IR leadership development assessment centre, and live 4IR integrated intelligence practice values.
