ENGLISH ABSTRACT: One of the main distresses that occurs in asphalt pavements is cracking. The resistance of asphalt material to cracking decreases with age. Binder rheology also influences cracking performance of asphalt mixtures and will have an affect with age. This study evaluates the efficiency of the semi-circular bending (SCB) test geometry as a practical fracture test method to present asphalt mixtures’ cracking resistance by capturing the effects of change in binder origin, ageing, binder content as well as notch depth. Binders were exposed to different levels of ageing using Rolling Thin Film Oven (RTFO) and Pressure Aging Vessel (PAV) ageing. Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) and Bending Beam Rheometer (BBR) testing were utilized to investigate the viscoelastic characteristics of the respective binders. The cracking performance of the asphalt mixtures was compared to their corresponding binder rheological properties to discover likely correlation. These tests were performed with the end goal to determine the applicability of the SCB test geometry to evaluate cracking performance as part of a Balance Mix Design (BMD). Results showed that the SCB test geometry presented asphalt mixtures’ cracking resistance by capturing the effects of change in binder origin, ageing, and binder content. No distinction could be made with the effect of change in notch depth. The results also showed that there is a correlation between rheological properties of binders and their corresponding asphalt mixtures’ cracking performance. These results can be used to justify the use of the SCB test geometry to evaluate cracking performance for a BMD. AFRIKAANS OPSOMMING: Een van die hoof swakhede wat in asfaltpaaie voorkom, is krake. Die weerstand van asfaltmateriaal teen krake neem af met ouderdom. Bindmiddelreologie beïnvloed ook die kraakprestasie van asfaltmengsels en sal ‘n effek hê met ouderdom. Hierdie studie evalueer die doeltreffendheid van die halfsirkelbuig (HSB) toetsgeometrie as 'n praktiese breuktoetsmetode om asfaltmengsels se kraakweerstand voor te stel, deur die effek van verandering in bindmiddeloorsprong, veroudering, bindmiddelinhoud sowel as kerfdiepte vas te lê. Bindmiddels is blootgestel aan verskillende vlakke van veroudering deur gebruik te maak van Rollende Dun Film Oond (RDFO) en Druk Verouderingsvat (DVV) veroudering. Dinamiese skuifreometer (DSR) en Buigbalk Reometer (BBR) toetse is gebruik om die viskoelastiese eienskappe van die onderskeie bindmiddels te ondersoek. Die kraakprestasie van die asfaltmengsels is vergelyk met hul ooreenstemmende bindmiddel reologiese eienskappe om waarskynlike korrelasie te vind. Hierdie toetse is uitgevoer met die einddoel om die toepaslikheid van die HSB-toetsgeometrie te bepaal om kraakprestasie as deel van 'n Balansmengselontwerp (BMO) te evalueer. Resultate het getoon dat die HSB-toetsgeometrie asfaltmengsels se kraakweerstand kon uitbeeld deur die effekte van verandering in bindmiddeloorsprong, veroudering en bindmiddelinhoud vas te lê. Geen onderskeid kon gemaak word deur die effek van verandering in kerfdiepte nie. Die resultate het ook getoon dat daar 'n korrelasie is tussen reologiese eienskappe van bindmiddels en hul ooreenstemmende asfaltmengsels se kraakprestasie. Hierdie resultate kan gebruik word om die gebruik van die HSB-toetsgeometrie te regverdig om kraakprestasie vir 'n BMO te evalueer.
