ENGLISH SUMMARY: Background: In March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic spread to South Africa. The unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic specifically affected the healthcare system of the country. The researcher observed that the frontline nursing staff were mostly affected as they were in direct contact with patient care. The nurses were stressed, anxious and exhausted which led to the research question: “What were the experiences of the frontline registered professional nurses about the COVID-19 pandemic in a public hospital in the uMgungundlovu health district of Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa?” Aim: The aim of the study was to explore the experiences of the frontline registered professional nurses about the COVID-19 pandemic in a public hospital in the uMgungundlovu health district of Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa. Objectives: The study objectives were to explore and describe the psychological and physical experiences of the frontline registered professional nurses about the COVID-19 pandemic in a public hospital in the uMgungundlovu health district of Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa. Methods: A qualitative exploratory-descriptive design was applied. The target population was frontline registered professional nurses working in a public hospital in the uMgungundlovu health district of Kwa-Zulu Natal. The total population was 136 frontline registered nurses working in the COVID-19 units. A purposive sample of 10 frontline registered professional nurses were recruited. The Health Research Ethical Committee of Stellenbosch University approved the study, ref. no. S22/04/006_COVID-19 (Addendum 1), including the Provincial Department of Health, ref.no. NHRD Ref: KZ_ 202206_018 (Addendum 3) and individual informed consent. A pilot interview was conducted which supported the trustworthiness of the study. In addition, the trustworthiness of the study was addressed by applying credibility, dependability, confirmability, and transferability, which included member checking, reflexivity, bracketing and providing elaborate detail of steps and emergent details of the study. The researcher collected the data with the use of a semi-structured interview guide in face- to- face interviews. All the ethical principles were adhered to, specifically informed consent, the right to anonymity and confidentiality of the participants. Findings: The themes identified were the nursing-related challenges, personal protective equipment (PPE)-related challenges, equipment and utility during the COVID-19 pandemic, anxiety, fear, stress and leadership support. It was evident from participants’ responses that the COVID-19 pandemic had a detrimental effect on the nurses as stated: “The fear was contracting the virus, which some of us did contract it and we lost some of our staff members which is very traumatizing for us left on duty.” (P6, page 6, line 185); “There was no formal support group that we formed…” (P10, page 6, line 259) Recommendation: Strengthening of structures such as occupational health and safety, infection prevention and control, leadership support, as well as psychotherapy to prepare for future pandemics. Conclusion: Nurses comprise the majority of the workforce in a healthcare system. It is imperative to ensure a healthy, safe and conducive environment, in order to provide safe quality care to patients. The study has shown the shortcomings nurses had to endure during the COVID-19 pandemic during which there were so much suffering, physically and psychologically among the nurses that should never happen again. Metodes: ‘n Kwalitatiewe ondersoek-beskrywende ontwerp is toegepas. The fear was contracting the virus, which some of us did contract it and we lost some of our staff members which is very traumatizing for us left on duty.” (P6, bladsy 6, reel 185); “There was no formal support group that we formed…”
