Faculty of Engineering. Dept. of Industrial Engineering. Augmented reality Context-aware computing Industrial maintenance Thesis (MEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2023. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Augmented Reality is always said to have enormous potential in connection with industrial maintenance. Nevertheless, the development in this area has only progressed slowly or even stagnated in recent years. The reasons for this are the complex development of contents. Augmented reality applications are often designed for one purpose and can thus only be used for a certain number of tasks. Modern approaches use object recognition and real-time data to create these applications for different application scenarios automatically. The problem is that the prerequisites for implementing such solutions are not given to existing systems. Simple solutions that can be implemented quickly are not available. This work, therefore, deals with the problem of what a cost-effective approach to creating augmented reality content looks like and what prerequisites precede this. Based on the design research process, a prototype system was designed that offers companies an easy way to create augmented reality solutions. The requirements for this system can be fulfilled in a short time and without the help of experts. A systematic literature review was conducted to identify approaches for automatically created, and context-aware Augmented Reality in the literature. The prototype was developed using an iterative waterfall model in Python and Unity 3D. The implementation and validation of the system were carried out at Werk150 in Reutlingen. Interviews were conducted with industry experts to evaluate the system. Conducting a systematic literature review on industrial maintenance underlines the research gap. This work has shown a need for simple, automatic, and context-aware augmented reality solutions in practice. The thesis presents a first implementation idea on how existing information can be processed to be used for such an application. Furthermore, it is shown that an AR application with the prepared information works in practical use and that such an application has added value for manufacturing companies.
