Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Centre for Rehabilitation Studies. Lower limb amputation -- KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa) Patient satisfaction -- KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa) Leg -- Amputation -- KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa) UCTD Thesis (MHumanRehabSt)--Stellenbosch University, 2023. ENGLISH SUMMARY: Background: Prosthesis satisfaction allows for optimum use of the prosthesis and decreases the chances of rejection, ultimately improving the quality of life of prosthetic users. Aim: The study aimed to identify factors that influence prosthesis satisfaction among first-time, lower-limb prosthetic users from Wentworth Hospital in KwaZulu-Natal. Methods: The research followed a Qualitative Descriptive approach. The study was conducted at three clinics of an Orthotic and Prosthetic Centre in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The study population consisted of 21 first-time, lower-limb, adult prosthetic users, who received a prosthesis between 1 August 2021 and 31 July 2022. Purposive sampling was used to identify 12 participants. Data was obtained telephonically via a semi-structured interview. The data was analysed using inductive thematic analysis. Findings: Of the 12 participants, 8 were males and 4 were females. Eight had above-knee prostheses and 4 had below-knee prostheses. Among them 6 always used other assistive devices with their prosthesis, and 3 made use of assistive devices at times. Three themes emerged, namely satisfaction with the prosthesis, functionality and expectations. Overall, participants were satisfied with the prosthesis owing to functionality, and improved body image. Weight, aesthetics, discomfort, pain, height and function of the prosthesis caused dissatisfaction. Walking and basic mobility were achieved, but only some participants achieved advanced mobility. Initial expectations varied between knowing what to expect and no expectation. Conclusion: Despite participants’ professed satisfaction, functioning was limited. Handheld assistive devices and wheelchairs were often used with the prosthesis. The factors that lead to dissatisfaction are remediable. Data is telefonies verkry via ’n semi-gestruktureerde onderhoud.
