Industrial Psychology -- Africa Personnel management -- Africa Corporations -- Personnel management -- Africa UCTD Thesis (MCom)--Stellenbosch University, 2023. ENGLISH SUMMARY: This study explored three cases in Africa, namely Kenya, Nigeria, and Zambia, where the statutory recognition of HRM as a profession has been promulgated. In doing so, the researcher determined how the statutory recognition of the HRM profession looks like in Africa. In summary, the current research aimed to achieve the following objectives: first, to investigate the HR profession’s statutory recognition journey in selected African countries (Kenya, Nigeria, and Zambia); second, to determine the drivers/motives of pursuing statutory recognition for Africa's HRM profession; third, to determine the advantages and/or challenges of giving statutory recognition to the HR profession; fourth, to recommend whether South African HR professional should pursue the statutory recognition route, or continue as a non-statutory profession (i.e. if so desired, under which conditions); last, to propose guidelines for an HR statutory model, should South Africa decide to follow the statutory recognition process for the HR profession. To achieve these objectives, the researcher conducted qualitative research by exploring three cases: Kenya, Nigeria, and Zambia. Data were collected during semi-structured interviews (i.e. using purposive and snowball sampling), and document analysis (including HR Acts from the three selected cases). Therefore, semi-structured interviews (n = 4 for each case, N = 12 in total) and document analysis were used (as a triangulation and saturation method) to confirm that both sources of information coincide. Thematic analysis was used as the primary vehicle for evaluating the semi-structured interview data, aided with ATLAS.ti software. Data were coded to create sub-themes and main themes. Further, documents (specifically HR acts of the respective cases) were included for document analysis. The findings of this study indicate that, for the South African Board for People Practice (SABPP) to achieve the statutory recognition of the HRM profession successfully, various (formal) processes should be followed. These processes, together with limitations, and recommendations for future research, are presented.
