Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences. Dept. of Industrial Psychology. Industrial safety -- Psychological aspects Industrial safety -- Management Leadership -- Social aspects Organizational behavior UCTD Thesis (MCom)--Stellenbosch University, 2023. ENGLISH SUMMARY: Safety is an important metric of performance for organisations operating in the highrisk industry. This is as a result of safety behaviour being critical for ensuring an organisation’s sustainability, particularly within high-risk industries. Results from several studies support the notion that the majority of occupational accidents are caused by people rather than unsafe physical working environments. Literature also points to organisational and managerial factors. Building on the organisational contributors’ literature, this study explored the relationship between how safety leadership, an important organisational factor, influences safety behaviour within the context of other human factors. The research was guided by the question, "What is the relationship between safety leadership and safety behaviour within the context of other human factors?" The empirical objectives of the study were to understand the influence of safety leadership on safety behaviour within the context of other human factors, and to test the safety leadership-safety behaviour model, as well as to provide recommendations on how to use safety leadership to influence safety behaviour. The study theorised on the relationship between leadership, other human factors and safety behaviour through a critical review of literature, which culminated in the development of a structural model which is anchored in the theory of planned behaviour and can account for the relationship between safety leadership and safety behaviour within the context of human factors. Six hypotheses were formulated and illustrated through the structural model based on the critical literature discussions. An ex post facto correlation design was used as a research design. Data was collected from operational level employees in an organisation in the petroleum industry using an online survey which was distributed via QR code on a flyer. The results from the study uncovered that safety leadership influences safety behaviour indirectly by influencing various human factors. In particular, the results illustrated that safety leadership had a close and positive relationship with an employee’s perception of management’s commitment to safety. Additionally, the correlation between safety behavioural attitudes and an employee’s safety behavioural intention was the largest. More significantly, however, was the statistically significant, albeit not very strong, relationship between an employee’s intention to behave and safety behaviour. Interestingly, there was no significant relationship between an employee’s perception of management’s commitment to safety and their intention to behave. The study provides insight for organisations in high-risk industries on the relationship between safety leadership and safety behaviour. Organisations can learn from the outcomes of this study to use safety leadership more effectively in their attempts to manipulate the safety behaviour of their employees and thus improve the sustainability of their organisations. ʼn Ex post facto korrelasie-ontwerp is gebruik as ʼn navorsingsontwerp.
