The notion of scholarship is important to the individual academic as well as to the higher education institution that employs the academic. However, scholarship remains a challenging and evolving concept. Furthermore, there is scant research on scholarship and the conceptualisation thereof, specifically within the context of private higher education. Scholarship is not clearly defined and little has been published on the influence of context, such as the for-profit private higher education sector. Private higher education is expanding globally and the influence that the business model might have on the theoretical and practised notion of scholarship should be explored and further researched for a more holistic understanding of scholarship. This study aimed to conceptualise scholarship within private higher education in South Africa. This was accomplished firstly, by conducting a scoping review of the existing literature on the conceptualisation of scholarship. The scoping review indicated gaps in the existing literature, such as the scarcity of research on the conceptualisation of scholarship within private higher education. The scoping review also highlighted the need for change to the way scholarship is enacted by institutions and the need to modernise the concept of scholarship. Secondly, five full-time academics at a South African private higher education institution were interviewed to understand their experiences by means of an interpretive phenomenological study. The data analysis from the interviews provided valuable information on the lived experiences of academics and the context provided by private higher education institutions. This study contributes to the enhanced understanding of scholarship, the unique context of private higher education institutions and the experience and interpretation of scholarship from full-time academics within the industry.
