ENGLISH SUMMARY: The development of transport infrastructure has been widely regarded as a vital contributor to economic growth. Although it has generally been presumed that high-quality transportation infrastructure is a necessary condition for economic development, this assumption has never been fully explored. It remains a widely discussed topic in academia with several study findings and empirical results remaining inconclusive. This study aimed to quantify and determine the strength of the relationship that exists between transport infrastructure and economic development. A comparison with the economic indicators that influence economic growth and development within a country is also provided. By means of a cross-country analysis, differentiating between developed and developing countries, there is an analysis into which of the transport sectors among maritime, air and rail, make the greatest contribution to economic development. The research hypothesised that better international connectivity, as provided by maritime and air transport infrastructure and operations facilitate higher economic development. More specifically, these two elements, along with rail, are the transport infrastructure networks that support trade and per definition economic growth The study concludes with a policy recommendation to aid policymakers in determining which transport sectors are most efficient and effective in their contribution to economic development and should therefore be given greater consideration in terms of transport infrastructure investment decisions.
