ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Decision-making is an activity that every human undertakes daily. There are certainfactors that can influence the decision-making process, such as cultural aspects, socioeconomic situation, and educational background. Evidence over the last decade havepointed to language playing a role in the decisions we make. Thus, this study set out toexplore the effects of language on the decision-making process by investigating moraljudgements in a multilingual society. More specifically, it aimed to answer the question“Does such an effect occur in rich multilingual societies?” Previous research on this topichas concentrated on less linguistically diverse contexts, making this study unique. Theirevidence also points to the importance of proficiency, age of acquisition, and frequencyof use of the language in question. Given this study was set in a rich multilingual society,it provides insightful evidence regarding these factors. The data of 160 participants were collected, consisting mostly of universityundergraduates. These individuals can be considered highly multilingual because of thecontext in which data was collected and the language profiles reported by participants.Participants were isiXhosa native speakers who also spoke English. The conventionaldilemma types were used in line with this type of research, being the trolley andfootbridge dilemmas. In addition, a vaccine dilemma was used as a means to provide ascenario that participants are likely more familiar with in light of the recent pandemic.Data analysis was approached in the classical way. Bayesian statistics were also used. This is an approach that only one other study has recently done in this line of research.Furthermore, exploratory analyses were conducted to investigate the language factors thathave stood out as important, being proficiency, age of acquisition, and frequency of use.For both language conditions, participants more frequently chose the utilitarian responsefor the trolley dilemma. This trend is observed in the reverse for the footbridge andvaccine dilemmas to which participants more frequently responded with the deontologicalresponse. As a result, no difference was observed in response patters between the twolanguage conditions. The exploratory analysis revealed that age of acquisition correlatedwith dilemma response, but only for the trolley dilemma. Inconclusion, this study did notreplicate previous findings of a language effect.
