ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Few studies have explored the kinematic variables governing carry distance during range hitting in cricket within a women’s population. The aim of the study is to describe the relationship between upper body strength and ball carry distance during range hitting in experienced female cricketers, then describe the relationship i) lead arm elbow extension ii) wrist uncocking iii) pelvis-thorax separation angle has with distance achieved in a range hitting task. Twenty professional or semi-professional female cricketers (age 23 ± 2.63 years and height 1.66 ± 0.08 meters) participated in the study and completed all testing. A range hitting task on an outdoor grass net was completed by each participant. Nine Noraxon® myoMotion Research PRO inertial measurement units (IMU) were attached to the participant’s upper body (upper arms, forearms, and hands) and back (upper thoracic, lower thoracic and lumbar spine) to collect wireless acceleration data. Informed consent was given by all players and ethics was approved by the Health Research Ethics Committee of the faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Stellenbosch University. Linear acceleration data (200Hz and ± 16g) was collected at the nine different IMU sites and the data (three dimensional) was streamed to the Noraxon® myoRESEARCH software. The points of interest from the six signal channels (Thoracic Axial, Lumbar Axial, Elbow Extension, Wrist Extension, Wrist Radial Deviation, and Wrist Supination) were transferred and tabulated in Microsoft Excel (version 2207). The tabulated data was transferred to IBM SPSS Statistics 28.0.0.0 (SPSS Inc.,Armonk, New York, USA). The statistical analysis provided information on carry distance, kinematic variables (pelvis-thorax separation angle at the commencement of the downswing, range of elbow extension during the downswing, range of wrist extension during the downswing (X,Y;Z) and grip strength. Results revealed that non-dominant hand grip strength had a significant relationship with carry distance (p = 0.042) and accounted for 34% of the variation seen in carry distance. Furthermore, dominant hand grip strength, range of lead arm elbow extension, range of lead arm wrist uncocking (X,Y,Z) and pelvis and thorax segment separation did not have a relationship with carry distance. The first null hypothesis is rejected as non-dominant hand grip strength had a significant relationship with carry distance. The second null hypothesis was not rejected as range of lead arm elbow extension did not have a relationship with carry distance. The third null hypothesis was not rejected as range of lead arm wrist uncocking (X,Y,Z) did not have a relationship with carry distance. The fourth null hypothesis was not rejected as pelvis and thorax segment separation did not have a relationship with carry distance. Future studies could aim to investigate whether similar results are found if the same variables are used but with different cohorts. Another future study could aim to investigate the lower body kinematics used during range hitting and whether it performs an essential part of a range hitting technique. Lastly, future studies could aim to investigate the roles and contributions of the muscles recruited during range hitting using electromyography. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Weinig studies het die kinematiese veranderlikes ondersoek wat bal trek afstand bepaal tydens ’n langafstandhou in vroue krieket. Die doel van die studie was om die verhouding tussen bolyfkrag en baltrekafstand by ervare vroue krieketspelers te beskryf en die verhouding ten opsigte van i) voorarm elmboog ekstensie ii) pols vrylating iii) pelvis-toraks skeidingshoek met bal trek afstand bereik tydens ’n langafstandhou. Die doel van die studie was ook om vas te stel of daar by Suid-Afrikaanse ervare vroue krieket spelers ’n verband is tussen greepsterkte, tegniek en bal dra afstand tydens ’n krag spel taak. Twintig professionele of semi-professionele krieketspelers (ouderdom 23 ± 2.63 jaar en lengte 1.66 ± 0.08 meter) het aan die studie deelgeneem en die toetse volledig voltooi. ’n Reeks langafstandhoue is deur elke deelnemer in ‘n buiteluggrasnet voltooi. Nege Noraxon® myoMotion Research PRO “Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU)” is aan die deelnemer se bolyf (bo-arms, voorarms en hande) en rug (boonste torakale, onderste torakale en lumbale ruggraat) geheg om koordlose versnellingsdata in te samel. Lineêre versnellingsdata (200Hz en ± 16g) is by die nege verskillende IMU-punte ingesamel en die data (drie-dimensioneel) is na die Noraxon® myoRESEARCH- sagteware gestroom. Die relevante data is van die ses seinkanale (torakale aksiale, lumbale aksiale, elmboog ekstensie, gewrig ekstensie, gewrig radiale deviasie, en gewrig supinasie) oorgedra en in Microsoft Excel (weergawe 2207) getabelleer. Die getabelleerde data is oorgedra na IBM SPSS Statistics 28.0.0.0 (SPSS Inc., Armonk, New York, VSA). Die statistiese analise het inligting verskaf rakende bal dra afstand, kinematiese veranderlikes (pelvis- toraksskeidingshoek by die aanvang van die afswaai, omvang van elmboog ekstensie tydens die afswaai, omvang van gewrig ekstensie tydens die afswaai (X,Y,Z) en greepsterkte. Die resultate is in hoofstuk vier bespreek en het aan die lig gebring dat nie-dominante handgreepsterkte ‘n beduidende verband met bal dra afstand gehad het (p = 0.042) en verantwoordelik is vir 34% van die variasie wat in bal dra afstand waargeneem word. Verder het dominante handgreepsterkte, omvang van lei-arm elmboog ekstensie, omvang van lei-arm gewrigsonttrekking (X,Y,Z) en pelvis- en torakssegmentskeiding nie ‘n verband met bal dra afstand getoon nie. Die eerste nulhipotese word verwerp aangesien nie-dominante handgreepsterkte ‘n beduidende verband met bal dra afstand het. Die tweede nulhipotese is nie verwerp nie aangesien omvang van lei-arm elmboogekstensie nie ‘n verband met bal dra afstand het nie. Die derde nulhipotese is nie verwerp nie aangesien die omvang van lei-arm gewrigsonttrekking (X,Y,Z) nie ‘n verband met bal dra afstand het nie. Die vierde nulhipotese is nie verwerp nie aangesien pelvis-en torakssegmentskeiding nie verband hou met bal dra afstand nie. Toekomstige studies kan ondersoek instel of soortgelyke resultate bevind word as dieselfde veranderlikes gebruik word maar met verskillende kohorte. Verder kan die kinematika van die onderlyf wat tydens afstandslaan gebruik word, ondersoek word en of dit ’n noodsaaklike deel van afstandslaantegniek is.
