Faculty of Education. Dept. of Educational Psychology. Rape culture Gender-based violence Eduction, Secondary Gender identity Teachers UCTD Thesis (MEdPsych)--Stellenbosch University, 2023. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: There is an increased focus on gender-based violence and rape culture, both in academic and popular domains. South Africa has one of the highest incidents of gender-based violence on which much research has focused, including studies conducted at schools where these behaviours and tendencies may be learned and reproduced. However, few studies on rape culture have been conducted in schools in affluent areas in South Africa. This qualitative study explores how teachers’ conceptualise and respond to experiences of rape culture in high school. It is grounded in both social constructionist and feminist theory. Eight teachers from a single, co-educational public high school serving an affluent area of the southern suburbs of Cape Town, South Africa, were selected as participants. The research included three phases: semi-structured individual interviews, participants’ written reflections and two focus group interviews focusing on the male and female participants respectively. The themes that emerged included narratives of defining gender inequality versus rape culture; the socialisation of rape culture; and narratives of tensions between resisting and reproducing rape culture in school policy, among the staff and among the student body. The findings suggested that as a site of socialisation, schools both challenge and perpetuate rape culture in different ways and at different levels. While the participants’ acknowledged the difficulty in challenging rape culture in schools, they also demanded it a necessity and a responsibility for schools to continuously and collaboratively tackle this challenge in various ways. Min studies oor verkragtingskultuur is egter in skole in gegoede gebiede in Suid-Afrika gedoen.
