ENGLISH SUMMARY: Patient and Family Centred Care (PFCC) promotes partnerships between patients, families, and nurses. The core concepts of PFCC include dignity and respect, information sharing, participation, collaboration, and professional education. Patient and Family Centred Care was not well integrated into the peri-operative context in hospitals in the Upper East Region of Ghana. With this study, an educational intervention was developed for nurses in the Upper East Region to implement PFCC in a peri-operative context. The educational intervention might assist in the translation of evidence, with the probability of changing practices, attitudes, and behaviour of nurses toward PFCC. The study was conducted in three phases. Phase 1 comprised a scoping review of literature in search of available evidence on strategies and content international nurses used to implement PFCC in a peri-operative context. Phase 2 comprised a qualitative approach. A self-designed, semi-structured interview guide was used, with individual and focus group interviews, to explore nurses’ perceptions of PFCC, barriers, and facilitators to the implementation of PFCC in a peri-operative context. The data were analysed using thematic analysis, which resulted in the identification of four major themes and their sub-themes. The main themes were as follows: (1) Nurses’ understanding of the concept of PFCC; (2) the benefits of PFCC practices to nurses, patients and families, and the health system; (3) barriers to PFCC implementation relating to nurses, patients, and families, managerial and health system; (4) the need for training of nurses, patients, and families, monitoring and supervision, and integration of PFCC into the nursing curriculum. In Phase 3, an educational intervention with the appropriate content, learning objectives, and implementation strategies for nurses to implement PFCC in a peri-operative context was developed. The Implementation of Change (IoC) model of Grol and Wensing guided the overall study. The ADDIE instructional model, which was created by the Centre for Educational Technology at Florida State University in the United States in 1975 and adapted by Branson, Rayner, Cox, Furman, King, Hannum guided the development of the educational intervention. The application of Kolb’s experiential learning theory informed the appropriate strategies to deliver an educational intervention to nurses. Eight expert panel members reviewed the educational intervention for its simplicity, generality, feasibility and relevance by way of a draft provided to them. A pilot of the intervention were presented to peri-operative nurses at the regional hospital to assess its feasibility and to make recommendations. The format for the evaluation of the intervention was based on the criteria of Chinn and Kramer. The assessment indicated that the education intervention was simple, general, feasible and relevant to implement PFCC in a peri-operative context in hospitals in the Upper East Region of Ghana. Ethical consideration was maintained throughout the study. The findings showed that nurses could use an educational intervention to implement PFCC in a peri-operative context in hospitals in the Upper East Region of Ghana.
