ENGLISH SUMMARY: Introduction: Biofortificayion has been used to improve the micronutrient content of crops consumed by rural-poor households. The Copenhagen Consensus identified biofortification as a key intervention to reduce micronutrient deficiencies in low-and-middle-income countries (LMICs). Zambia has adopted this strategy by biofortifying staple food crops to alleviate micronutrient deficiencies such as vitamin A, iron and zinc, especially among poor households in rural areas. Mbereshi beans is a biofortified bean variety that was released in 2012 to aid in addressing iron and zinc micronutrient deficiencies in Zambia. Primary to the positive nutritional gains that may arise from the release of the Mbereshi bean variety is an increase in production and consumption of the bean variety. The aim of the study was to establish whether the release of the Mbereshi bean variety has affected the production and consumption paterns of the iron-enriched variety by the smallholder farmers in Senga Hill District. A cross-sectional descriptive study design with an analytical component was adopted for this research. A total of 250 smallholder farmers and three bean input suppliers were sampled for the study. Data were collected by means of structured questionnaires and a food frequency table. Microsoft Excel and SPSS software were used for data analysis. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the characteristics of the respondents. The t-test for independent samples was used to assess the mean differences between the quantity of Mbereshi beans produced and kept for consumption and the quantity of other bean varieties kept for consumption. Furthermore, logistic regression was applied to identify factors affecting the consumption of Mbereshi beans, and all the tests were evaluated at the 5% level of significance. The study found that despite the variety having been released more than a decade ago, the production and consumption levels of Mbereshi beans are still low. There is thus need for development and implementation of policies that will stimulate the production and consumption of this iron-enhanced beans variety. Given the number of stakeholders involved in the value chain, a value-chain approach should be adopted in implementing nutrition strategies along the agricultural production pathway. Targeted communication strategies need to be incorporated in promoting the adoption of consumption and production of biofortified beans.
