Faculty of AgriSciences. Dept. of Agricultural Economics. Ethiopian coffee industry value chain Relative trade advantage Normalised revealed comparative advantage Pentagon competitiveness model Porter diamond model Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2023. Ethiopian coffee – globally respected and widely traded – builds on strong comparative advantages. These are based on natural resource endowments related to the wide range of agro-ecologies, genetic diversity and production systems that deliver unique Ethiopian coffee beans with a variety of flavours and tastes. To these attributes can be added the image of Ethiopia being the ‘place of origin of Arabica coffee’, and the related and widely acknowledged Ethiopian coffee culture. All these, combined with a strategy of reliable business systems, distinct branding and certification to capture these attributes, provide Ethiopia the opportunity to turn the comparative advantages into business-directed competitive advantages in a highly contested international coffee market. Despite these attributes, the industry is viewed as not capitalising fully on such prospects. This study focused on describing, measuring and analysing the competitive performance of the Ethiopian coffee industry in the context of a competitive advantage theoretical construct derived from the ‘new competitiveness theory’ and the Porter diamond model (Porter, 1990), along with trade-based measures of competitiveness proposed by Balassa (1965), Vollrath (1991) and Yu et al. (2009). It followed a mixed research approach and a stepwise analytical procedure to answer the research questions of the study.
