Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Geography & Environmental Studies. Sports Facilities Multi-stakeholder Low-income Community Community-driven Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2023. Community-driven sports facilities and activities are seen as the alternative to formalised sports clubs and organisations. Community sport is characterised by being affordable, approachable, focusing on the local and usually occurring within an informal structure. The low-income community of Chicago, located in Paarl, have facilitated a range of sporting types for many years. The state and provision of sports facilities are however not up to standard, becoming unusable to a large extent. Using both qualitative and quantitative methods the study illustrates the state of the facilities as well as the provision thereof, considering the CSIR guidelines for social facilities. This is supported through a group discussion and interviews of community members, to illustrate the range of problems and faults present within the institutional system. The study stresses the need for collaboration, fostering partnerships and implementing a multi-stakeholder approach. The study concludes by reflecting on whether the provision of sports facilities has become a spatial matter or not and the influence that local government yields.
